How long does tea stay good for?
December 15, 2009There have been bags of lipton regular tea in my cupboard for years. The plastic seal covering the box was broken, so the only type of cover they have had are the individual paper bags they come in, and a box where they were being held. The original box didn’t have an expiration date.
Na, it was stored in a dry place i believe, but I will check for mold. And we did have mice for awhile, but I don’t think they ever got in the cupboards. THanks a lot guys, i’ll give some a try later.
It is a dried up herb basically. It may become stale..but you wont taste the difference if you make it stronger then normal.
I do this all the time lol

The tea doesn’t go bad, it just loses flavor.

Since it is just dried tea it should still be good. most dry foods/drinks will last a long long time. If the box doesn’t have an expiration date, I’d say they’re okay. If the company knew they would expire, I’m sure they’d put an expiration date on there to keep themselves safe against a weird law suit.

The only possible problems there are:
a) mold if it’s damp in the cupboard — if it’s been damp in there at all I’d toss them
b) mouse contamination — if mice have been in there you’ll see the poops
c) household contaminants like lead from paint, or inedible chemicals that have been stored in there

These lipton teabags have probably gone stale. The proper way to store tea is in an airtight container, away from sunlight. The chemicals in tea that give tea its wonderful aroma are volatile, and will slowly escape if the tea is exposed to air…eventually leaving a tea with little or no aroma.
If stored properly (dark area, airtight container), black tea (normal "tea" in the US or UK) usually keeps 2 years. It then starts losing flavor, although it is still drinkable. Green and white tea keep much less long…typically about 6 months. A few types of tea, such as Pu-erh, can actually get better with age–Pu-erh should be stored in an area that is not airtight.
If you have stale black tea that you want to get rid of, you can try mixing it with mint tea, or adding lemon, to add more flavor if you don’t want to just throw it out…I find this makes it taste better.
I hope this helps!

Lipton tea is packaged stale, and it doesn’t get worse than that. Check for mold and un-tea-like smells and everything should be alright.
